I’m writing this on a Sunday, which means NY Times Sunday Styles equivocations: amateur lesbian webisode series Girl/Girl Scene is a product of Twitter’s hyper-active efforts to commodify one’s everyday surroundings into status symbols. Scene does everything the typical lifestyle drama show does: characters brunch, name-drop local bands, and attend boozy parties. Except, unlike the Showtime the lesbian soap-opera it so clearly admires, The L-Word, the show is shot in Kentucky and the suburbs of Illinois. “All the indie lesbians”, are Sunday strip-mall lay-abouts who eat at the same “Doodles” restaurant. Girl/Girl Scene depicts a labyrinthine Middle American of condos and highway dive bars where the Motel 6 room is a lesbian coven.

The show’s excessive 40-minute running time seem to put dreams of commercial viability or a television pick-up beside the point: it’s a vanity project for Writer/executive-producer/star/real-life meteorologist Tucky Williams. She plays the equivalent of The L-Word’s Shane, Evan, a brash playgirl whom everyone wants to bang. Of course, part of the appeal of the show is how easy it is to feel smug about the characters’ uncoolness, and the amateurish production values. The camera isn’t even white balanced. But there’s something delightfully unhinged about a show in which a major plot line involves a 16-year old girl who becomes obsessed with Evan after she lies about her age and sleeps with her. Still, if Scene seems liberated in terms of its celebration of underage consensual sex, this is still a show in which the Trans-man is a sexless sidekick. Girl/Girl Scene is surreal in only the way that amateur media aspiring to conventionality can be.

The pleasure in looking at Lee’s complete oeuvre comes from recognizing how this modest filmmaker’s visual style continues to evolve and adapt: from the structurally clean compositions of This Charming Girl (2004) to the rich, high-density images of Ad Lib Night (2006); from the spare, awkward scope frames of Love Talk (2005), and, finally, to the sleek, clever widescreen two-shots in My Dear Enemy.
Before Departure will be screening at the Dallas VideoFest on Sat., Nov. 6, at noon. It is included as part of the “Surface of the Pixel” shorts program, which also features work by Ken Jacobs and Nicolas Provost. It feels mighty nice to be included among them. Check out the festival’s schedule here.
